Exploring Different Dishes from Around the World
Wiener Schnitzel (Austria)
This thin, breaded and pan-fried cutlet made from veal is a hot favorite in Austria and is one of the best-known specialties of Viennese cuisine. Traditionally served with Kopfsalat (lettuce tossed with sweetened vinaigrette dressing), potato salad, cucumber salad or parsley potatoes, it can also be served with rice, French fries or roasted potatoes.
Peking duck (China)
This dish is popular for its crispy, thin-layered meat. The ducks, which are specially bred for it, are slaughtered after 65 days and roasted with seasonings. It is usually served with spring onions and sweet bean sauce.
Crêpe (France)
These thin pastries/pancakes, usually made from wheat flour, are a French street-food staple. They can have various savory or sweet fillings such as fresh herbs, spinach, vegetables, vanilla cream or honey.
Biryani (Pakistan)
This aromatic rice dish is made with meat and spices in which the meat and rice are cooked separately and then mixed together with condiments, including nutmeg, cloves, pepper, bay leaves, and garlic. A delicious main course dish, it is popular across the Indian subcontinent.
Pelmeni (Russia)
These dumplings are made from flour dough and filled with different types of minced meat including pork, lamb, beef or fish. The fillings are flavored with various vegetables including peppers and onions.
Doner kebab (Turkey)
Believed to be invented during the Ottoman Empire, this popular meat preparation is the inspiration behind the Arabic "Shawarma," Greek "Gyros," and Mexican "Al pastor." It is made of seasoned meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie, with the outer layer sliced vertically as it cooks.
Bobotie (South Africa)
This popular South African dish is made of spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping and is served with sambal, a hot chili sauce. It traces its origin back to the 17th century when it was made with a mixture of mutton and pork.
Empanada (Chile)
This stuffed bread or pastry is baked or fried and is found in many countries of Latin America and in Spain. The filling primarily consists of meat and cheese, and it is consumed extensively during September, the month during which Chile celebrates its independence.
